Lessons I Learned from Paris Hilton

Today we’ll talk about shameless self-promotion. That’s right, I said it! Shameless! After all, we are learning from Paris Hilton here.

It’s all about self-promotion! Self-promotion comes in many forms and you can use different tactics to get your name out there. Look at politicians! Talk about self-promotion and in some not so discreet ways, at that. But, seriously, consider some of the major superstars we all know. Madonna, Donald Trump, Howard Stern and Bill Clinton, just to name a few.

We all self-promote. Did you raise your hand in class to show the teacher you knew the answer? Of course! That’s self-promotion. This is the kind of self-promotion we are talking about. With dignity, class and the knowledge to back it up. If you self-promote only to prove you don’t really know what you’re talking about, you’re going to lose business.

Soulful Branding

It is an epic time to be a fitness professional! From joining in to make a difference in the war on health epidemics like obesity and depression, to harnessing technology advancements to deliver fitness services across the globe, our field is exploding with opportunity.  Here you stand, ready with a solid education and the heart of a champion, determined make a difference.  But with scores of people joining the fitness industry every day, how will YOU stand out?
Regardless of the path, you pursue as a fit pro, it is your brand that will make you identifiable.  Think you’ve got it covered with a striking logo and website?  Think again… that’s just skimming the surface.  Your brand can be so much more!  You say you’ve got a fierce drive, determination, and an unmatched work ethic?  Awesome, but go bigger!

How do I get personal training clients?

How do I get personal training clients?

It’s a question I heard every time from trainers.

A full-time personal trainer needs 15-20 clients to work 30-40 hours/week considering that the average clients train 2-3 times a week. What other business do you know only needs 15-20 customers? Building up relationships with your clients is the only way to succeed. They love you, not your gym. You must take responsibility for your business and yes, it’s your business even if you work for somebody else!!

I have two rules for success. These two rules have been applied in my career for the past 20 years:

Working with the older client Part 1

According to the 2012 Census, people over the age of 65 make up almost 14% of the US population. That means there are over 43 million seniors (adults 65 or older) today, with the numbers continuing to grow, reaching 70 million by 2030. This aging population creates a unique opportunity for the fitness professional to work with. In this article, we will review the effects of aging on the musculoskeletal system, learn simple functional assessments and understand benefits of strength strengthening. In part 2, strength training guidelines and programming for common aging conditions will be discussed.

Effects of Aging on the Musculoskeletal System

The aging process involves changes to various structures and numerous systems within the body.  Research has shown that skeletal muscles change with age, specifically type II, where there is a decreased in these fibers, that atrophy over time, and a decrease in size (Brunner et al. 2007).

Start your own business

Have you ever dreamed of starting your own business? If yes, then you are not alone. Nearly 50% of employees in their 20s or 30s would like to start their own business (University of Phoenix 2014). However, according to the Wall Street Journal, only 3.6% of adults under age 30 own a stake in a private company (Simon 2015). If you truly desire to start a business, what’s stopping you? Perhaps you can’t raise the money. Or maybe you just don’t know where to begin. My guess is that the process seems overwhelming!

We all get discouraged when we think of what we would need to do to launch a business. But life doesn’t happen in a quantum leap. It happens in small steps you take toward your goal every day. In this article, I will provide 10 steps to get you started on starting your business. Does this mean that significant success will happen in 10 easy steps? No way! One step may need to be broken into five smaller ones. It’s up to you to decide how small the steps are. All that matters is that you keep moving forward.

What are the latest fitness trends? What should I be aware of that my clients may start talking to me about?

I believe that one of our roles as trainers is to stay current with all of the latest fitness research and trends.  However, it can be tough trying to choose which trends will have staying power.  New trends are constantly emerging, which is great because it gives trainers a chance to engage with our clients in a new way.  Through our expertise, we can determine the right trends to help our clients safely and successfully reach their goals.  Below are three fitness trends that I feel will be sticking around for a while…

Wearable Fitness Trackers

In this day and age, technology is at the forefront of most industries and fitness is no exception.  In just a few short years, wearable fitness tracking devices (such as Fitbit, Garmin, Jawbone, etc.) have surged in popularity and for good reason.  They are accessible and fun to use, easy to wear (the most popular styles being wristbands, watches or clip-on), plus they give you give real-time statistics to help keep track of otherwise hard-to-measure health data on a daily basis such as heart rate, steps taken, flights of stairs climbed, total  distance covered, sleep, and more.

Throwback Thursday: Continuing Education (December 24, 2014)

This week’s Throwback Thursday piece is “Continuing Education”, written by Lisa Lorraine Taylor on December 14, 2014.

Hi Fit Pros,

TrainerLisa here with a subject that is very near and dear to my heart…Continuing Education! As an AFAA CEU Provider and someone who is very passionate about keeping current with my personal certifications, I’d like to give you my intake on this awesome subject!

What are CEU’s/CEC’s?

CEU’s/CEC’s stand for Continuing Educational Units or Continuing Educational Credits and this is a MUST upon receiving your certification(s). Every certification regardless of if you certified as a Personal Trainer, Group Ex, Spinning, Yoga, R.I.P.P.E.D, Turbo Kick, Pilates Instructor, or Zumba, Crossfit or any other fitness professional certification or modality, staying current in our industry is not only a smart thing to do but in most cases it. Is. MANDATORY!

Medicine Ball Training

Medicine Balls are great tools that are making a comeback. You can use them to diversify your training and are an excellent alternative to working your total body. Medicine Balls can be used by one person or in a group. They allow for improved range of motion and core strength and can be used by the beginner, those in rehab, and sports athletes.

What is the best music for all ages of clients?

I train a couple of older clients during the time my co-workers train a few groups of younger athletes. The groups love to listen to louder pop/rap music that can sometimes be inappropriate in the eyes of my older clients. Do you have any music suggestions that can please both parties? If not, what is the best way to go about this?

Musical preference is so subjective.  Genres and songs that motivate one person to work out could very well sound like pure noise to another person.  Luckily there is enough musical variety to appeal to everyone’s taste but combining that under one fitness center roof (and one music system) takes a bit of creativity and compromise.
