Training ADHD and Autism Clients

Trainers and coaches have a fantastic opportunity to train a population that is passionate and ready for improving their daily life.  This population consists of youths, individuals, ADHD, and autistic participants.   ADHD Children, teens, and adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, often suffer from the inability to sit still. They squirm in their seats and are easily bored or distracted.

“How much personal information should I be sharing with my clients? Where does the line get drawn of personal vs professional?”

I’ll be honest – I have a group of my clientele that I consider to be my family. I genuinely love and care very deeply for these people. My wife and I invited these clients to our wedding. We wanted to spend the most important day of our life with them. Furthermore, we have been invited to their special occasions amongst spending quality time with them socially on the weekends. This kind of relationship takes quality time to build and is based solely upon trust. This trust has grown and continues to grow more powerful during each of our sessions together.

Personally, I pride myself on running a personal training and health company with the number one goal to always help my clients become happier and healthier physically and mentally. It’s this mentality that I always strive to help them create a better version of themselves. While personal training is indeed very “personal,” inadvertently you should never cross a line or become unprofessional. This behavior only leads to inappropriate tension and awkwardness, which doesn’t help the client progress to reach their goals. So, how did I go from training a first-time client into developing a bond in which they would become family while keeping it professional?

For someone looking to become a personal trainer, what are the best certifications to get?

“For someone looking to become a personal trainer, what are the best certifications to get?”

Foremost, congratulations for making the decision and commitment to become a certified personal trainer! If done correctly, this is a job that is fueled by passion, knowledge, and patience for your craft and your work with each individual client.

However, while knowing that you want to have a career in fitness, it can become incredibly overwhelming in which certification is correct for you and the business you’d wish to obtain.

There are a multitude of specialization certifications to receive that can benefit specific populations such as: pre- and post-natal, seniors, and youths. However, it’s best to become a certified personal trainer first before receiving these other specialization certifications.

The Evolution of a Personal Trainer

You’ve heard the classic story: He started in the mailroom and now he’s running the company! Personal training is no different than any other business – you must start from the bottom and work your way up. As far as I see it, a career in personal training should follow this timeline:

Late Teens and Twenties

This is the time to pay your dues by working for others. It is an opportunity to build up clientele, experience, and capital. Physically you will peak, but you have a lot to learn. Education is extremely important during this period. As I’ve said in the past, “the more you learn, the more you earn!”
